How to make a transparent PNG
When you place a shape on a slide, a document or a web page, a white box around it can ruin the look. The fix is a transparent PNG. This article explains what a transparent PNG is and how to make one with Shape Maker.
What is a transparent PNG?
A transparent PNG is a PNG image whose background is see-through. In an ordinary image, even the empty areas are filled with a color such as white. In a transparent PNG those areas have no color at all, so when you place the image on top of something else, whatever is underneath shows through.
PNG can store transparency information (an alpha channel). JPEG, the format commonly used for photos, cannot — so any image that needs a transparent background must be saved as PNG.
When transparent PNGs come in handy
- Presentations: add arrows or highlight boxes on top of colored slide backgrounds
- Websites and blogs: icons and decorations blend in regardless of the page background
- Photo editing: overlay circles or arrows on a photo to point something out
- Video captions: layer shapes and text over footage in a video editor
How to make a transparent PNG in Shape Maker
- Set the canvas size: in the Canvas section of the left panel (below the canvas on phones), enter the width and height. Matching the size of the area where the image will go saves resizing later.
- Make the background transparent: check that “Transparent background” is ticked — it is on by default. A gray-and-white checkerboard on the canvas means that area is transparent.
- Draw your shapes: pick a rectangle, circle, triangle, arrow or another tool from the toolbar and drag on the canvas. Select a shape to change its colors and stroke width in the panel.
- Save as PNG: in the Download section, set the format to PNG and click “Download image”.
Tips for a clean result
Don’t leave too much empty space
Transparent areas are still part of the image. If the canvas is much larger than your shapes, you will end up with invisible padding that makes positioning awkward. Resize the canvas so your shapes fit snugly.
Use 2x resolution or higher
Choosing 2x or 3x under Resolution saves the image at two or three times the canvas size in pixels. Lines stay sharp on high-density screens and in print, so 2x is a good default.
Watch out for white shapes and text
White shapes are hard to see against the checkerboard, but because transparent areas have no color, they will show up fine on a dark background. Choose colors with the final background in mind.
Common mistakes
- Saving as JPEG: JPEG does not support transparency, so the background becomes white. Always choose PNG when you need transparency.
- Unticking “Transparent background”: the image will be saved with a solid background color. Make sure you can see the checkerboard on the canvas.
- The destination doesn’t support transparency: some services display transparent areas as black or white. In that case, saving with a background color is the safer choice.
Summary
A transparent PNG is simply a PNG with a see-through background, and it is essential for layering shapes over documents and photos. In Shape Maker, keep the background transparent, draw your shapes and save as PNG. To learn more about formats, see PNG vs JPEG: which should you use?
